Colorectal cancer is a common disease, ranking as the 3rd most commonly diagnosed form of cancer among men and 2nd most commonly diagnosed form of cancer among females in Thailand, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. Many symptoms can be indicative of the disease, such as weakness or fatigue, abnormal bowel movements, diarrhea, bloody stool, abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss, and others. However, these symptoms will typically only occur once colorectal cancer has reached stage 2 or 3. Initially, this type of cancer will be asymptomatic. However, colorectal cancer can be detected early with a colonoscopy, which is recommended for all people over the age of 50.
Current colorectal cancer treatments include surgery, medication, and radiation therapy. Surgery is considered the main treatment option with the goal to remove the tumor and any lymph nodes to which the cancer may have spread. Fortunately, modern surgical methods have evolved to reduce the severity of the treatment through improved technology, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. This kind of surgery requires only a small incision in the abdomen, which helps reduce wounds and lead to faster recovery. Patients have a better quality of life following minimally invasive surgery, compared to the former method of major open abdominal surgery.
